What to see and do in Soustons
Nicknamed the "Pearl of Marensin", the small Landes resort of Soustons offers its visitors a privileged and varied environment, ideal for camping holidays in the green and fresh air of the sea. What to see and do in Soustons? Follow the guide!
Soustons, the village
Soustons has retained its character as a small Landes village, with its unique local produce, festivals and traditions. You'll need to push open the doors of the museum of traditions and old tools (Musée de La Pandelle), where a rich collection of tools and objects testifying to old trades is on display. Village life is also punctuated by the market, which takes place in the Place des Arènes every Monday and extends into the neighbouring streets in July and August.
Soustons, the beach
Soustons boasts a superb 6-kilometre stretch of fine sand between Vieux-Boucau to the north and Seignosse to the south. A wild, undeveloped area. Swimming is supervised in summer. It's also a renowned surfing spot, with great waves and surf schools to join the surfing tribe. Those who prefer to swim without the waves will prefer the Sauvagine beach, on the edge of the Port d'Albret marine lake.
Soustons, lake side
A Natura 2000 site, Lake Soustons straddles the communes of Soustons Plage and Vieux Boucau, just a stone's throw from the ocean. Families come here for a swim sheltered from the waves, a picnic and a walk in an enchanting natural setting. There's a 4km boardwalk that takes you around the lake on foot, by bike or with a pushchair.
In terms of leisure activities, water sports are all the rage. You can take a sailing lesson on a catamaran, learn or improve your windsurfing skills, or paddle a stand-up paddle or canoe. Fishing enthusiasts are not left out. The lake is teeming with white fish and predators. A godsend for carp, pike and black-bass anglers.
A trip down the Soustons stream
Make the most of your camping holiday near Soustons to take a trip down the Soustons stream in a canoe or kayak, a pretty 7km trip that winds its way through the heart of the Landes forest to the Port d'Albret marine lake. It's a great way to discover the local flora and fauna of this small coastal river in the Landes region.
The Pointe des Vergnes
The Pointe des Vergnes is a must for anyone visiting Soustons. This park, planted with alders, cork oaks and bald cypresses, offers a delightfully bucolic countryside walk and one of the best views of Lake Soustons from the observatory.
Walking or cycling around Soustons
Soustons offers plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling. Nearly 35 km of paths lead to the beaches and neighbouring resorts. Entirely tarmacked and off the beaten track, they form part of the Vélodyssé, which crosses more than 150 km of Landes coastline. A lovely 25km cycle loop takes in Soustons, Azur, Messanges and Vieux-Boucau. Mountain bikers will love the 20km of signposted trails around the large lake and through the Landes forest. Hikers can discover the mosaic of landscapes along the coast on the signposted GR8 paths, part of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, which skirts the coast and beaches of the Landes.
The Pinsolle golf course
Fancy a game of golf during your holidays? Nestling between pine trees and the ocean, in an exceptional setting, the Landes golf course offers a 9-hole course around the Pinsolle lake, a small neighbour of the marine lake. Golfers will find well-tended greens where they can try their hand at the little white ball or perfect their swing, with a surprising practice area over water.
